Frequently asked questions about SlingPlayer for Chromecast

SlingPlayer for Chromecast offers yet another way to watch your TV anywhere ... in this case, anywhere that you have a Chromecast device connected to your TV!

What is SlingPlayer for Chromecast? How does it work?

SlingPlayer for Chromecast is a feature of SlingPlayer for iPhone/iPod touch, SlingPlayer for iPad, SlingPlayer for Android Phones, and SlingPlayer for Android Tablets that teams your Slingbox with your Chromecast device. With SlingPlayer on your mobile device, you can stream your TV programs to Chromecast, and onto your TV. Just make sure that you've got a Slingbox 500, Slingbox M1/M2, or Slingbox 350, as well as the latest version of SlingPlayer on your mobile device. Then set up your Chromecast, and you'll be all set to go.

Sounds great! Can I do this from anywhere?

You only need to make sure that your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone or tablet and your Chromecast are connected to the same Wi-Fi network ... usually this means your home network. Also, be sure that your mobile device has Wi-Fi active!

I've set up my Chromecast - now what do I do?

Make sure that you have the latest version of SlingPlayer installed. Launch SlingPlayer, and connect to your Slingbox 500, Slingbox M1/M2, or Slingbox 350. Tap the screen to display the controls, then tap the "play to" icon to the right of the volume slider. Cast_Icon.ashx

Can I use my TV's remote control to change channels?

Not while you're using SlingPlayer for Chromecast. When you use SlingPlayer for Chromecast, you must use SlingPlayer to control your TV programs.

If I don't have an iPhone, iPad, or Android phone or tablet, how do I use SlingPlayer for Chromecast?

To use SlingPlayer for Chromecast, you must have a Slingbox 500, Slingbox M1/M2, or a Slingbox 350, as well as the SlingPlayer app running on a supported mobile device.

Sometimes the video going to the TV via Chromecast stops, or doesn't look very good. Why might that be happening?

The video signal is initiated by SlingPlayer, then handed off to the Chromecast to make a connection with the Slingbox. SlingPlayer also maintains a separate connection with the Slingbox to send IR commands. For the best video quality, make sure that both your mobile device and Chromecast have a good Wi-Fi signal available. Anytime the Wi-Fi signal isn't so good, performance may suffer. Also, you must keep SlingPlayer running in the foreground until it has established a connection with Chromecast. After the connection is established, you can put SlingPlayer in the background by going to another app.

Do I have to keep SlingPlayer running on my mobile device while using SlingPlayer for Chromecast?

After a connection is established with Chromecast, you can put SlingPlayer in the background by going to another app, or even turn your device off! But if you want to change channels or otherwise control your TV or DVR, you must reopen SlingPlayer by tapping the "play to" icon on the main screen.

Are all tablets supported? Are smartphones supported too?

The iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Android phones and tablets (except for the Fire Phone and Fire Tablet) are the only devices that are supported at this time.

What versions of Apple iOS are supported on my Apple devices?

iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad models running iOS 7.x or later.

What version of Android is supported?

Android phones or tablets running Android 4.0+.

Why aren’t earlier Slingbox models supported?

While Sling Media strives to provide feature support to all Slingbox customers, we cannot always foresee the technology requirements for future features and services that are offered. That being said, the Slingbox models that are supported, including the Slingbox 350, Slingbox 500, and Slingbox M1/M2, are far more cost affordable and powerful than any previous models.

Does GoogleTV work the same way? I don't see my device in the list.

No, SlingPlayer for Chromecast only works with Chromecast devices. Roku devices also show up in the list, but only work with SlingPlayer for Roku.

I can’t see the streaming icon on my supported device – what can I do to troubleshoot this?

If you don't see the streaming icon, try these steps:

  • Make sure your SlingPlayer app is up-to-date.
  • Make sure your phone or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the Chromecast device.
  • Stop streaming and start streaming again on the SlingPlayer app.
  • Reboot the Chromecast device from the Chromecast app on your device.
  • Reset the Chromecast network connection from the Chromecast app on your device.
