Sling Community Help and House Rules

The Sling Community is intended to be a simple and friendly place for Slingbox customers to help each other. Please use this space to ask questions about problems you are having or questions you have about the Slingbox. And if you know the answer to someone else's question, go ahead and help them out.

The rules are pretty simple.

  • Be nice.

Treat your fellow members with the respect they all deserve.
  • Stay on topic.

If you are replying to someone, be sure that your reply is about that (or a similar) topic.
  • Be honest.

Don't post the work of others - give credit where credit is due.
  • Be legal.

Don't encourage or discuss illegal activity or things that violate the Slingbox End User License Agreement.
  • Don't speculate.

Discussing unannounced Sling Media products, policies, or procedures is not appropriate.

Here are some frequently asked questions about the community and how to use it.

What is the Sling Community and how can it help me?

The Sling Community is a user-to-user support forum where Sling Media customers get together to ask questions about the Slingbox and help others. You can participate in discussions about Slingbox hardware and software, discover solutions to help you resolve issues, ask questions, get tips and advice, and more.

If you have a technical question about a Sling Media product, be sure to check out our support resources first by visiting our Support site to view setup videos, technical articles and more on our product support pages.

To participate in our Sling Community, you must agree to and abide by the Sling Community House Rules.

What do I need to get started?

You may browse and read any of the community without logging in, but if you want to post a question, reply to messages or vote in polls, you will need to log in with your Sling Account, the same account you use to log in to Watch on Slingbox.com to connect to your Slingbox.

If you don't already have a Sling Account, you can create an account by clicking Log In on the top left of any Discussions page. In the resulting page, follow the on-screen instructions to sign up for an account. For more information, see the article below:

Everything you ever wanted to know about creating a Sling Account

How do I ask a question?

The first thing to do is search the forums to see if your particular question has already been asked and answered.

If you can't find your answer that  way, simply navigate to the area that corresponds with issue you are  asking about and click the Start a Discussion link.

As an example, if you have a question  about problems you are having connecting to your Slingbox using Watch  on Slingbox.com on your Mac, from the Slingbox Answers Forum home page  you would select the following:

Watch on Slingbox.com for Mac -> I am away from home -> Start a discussion

How do I answer a question?

If you know the answer to a question, you can answer it by clicking on the Reply link next to the message.

If you would like to quote the previous message in your reply, click the Quote Previous Message button in the tool bar.

I have a question or issue—how do I search for answers?

If you are looking for an answer to a  question, you should search before you start a discussion. There is a  good chance that someone else has already asked and you will get your  answer much more quickly.

To search the forums, type your question and/or some key words into the Search Forums search bar near the top of the page.

How do I create my public profile?

When you log in to Slingbox Answers  Forum for the first time with your Sling Account, you can access your  public profile information by selecting Profile from the Your Stuff  menu.

Important:  If you are prompted to create a User name when you first access the Sling Community, we recommend that you do not enter your real  name. Your user name is what everyone else in the forum sees when they  look you up. Also note that angle bracket characters ( < >  ) and spaces are not allowed. Once you create an user name, you cannot  make changes to it.

The other fields on the page are optional.

Who at Sling Media watches over the Sling Community?
Administrators

Administrators are Sling Media  Employees who focus on maintaining, updating, and enhancing the  discussion forums. Administrators will also attempt to maintain proper  decorum in the discussion forums. Due to post volume and other factors,  Administrators may not respond promptly, or at all, to these  discussions.

Moderators

Moderators are Sling Media Employees  who focus on gathering technical feedback that will be forwarded to the  appropriate support, engineering or marketing teams within Sling Media.  They also help identify possible content for Sling Media's Knowledge  Base and, when possible, they correct erroneous information in the  forums. Moderators will also attempt to maintain proper decorum in the  discussion forums. Due to post volume and other factors, Hosts may not  respond promptly, or at all, to these discussions.

I need immediate help with my newly purchased Sling Media product. Why aren't I getting an answer to my question?

The forum is meant to be a place where users can help each other – if another forum user doesn't answer your question (and you need help right away), you should call the number for technical support listed on the right of each support page. All Slingboxes come with 1 year of complementary technical support.

I posted something and it appears to have been removed - why?

If your post or reply was removed by one of our Moderators, chances are high that something in the content violated the spirit of the House Rules, which outline the kind of general atmosphere that the community operates best under.

Moderators are under no obligation to disclose any reasoning behind their decision to moderate content on the forum. But if your post was moderated, just know that someone (a fellow user or moderator) reported it as objectionable, and after review it was deemed inappropriate or outside of the parameters of the House Rules.

Try posting again, but please note: we want to keep the focus on technical support and help here. As a community, we want a civil discussion and we want our technical questions answered in a friendly, open way.

Also note that comments which disparage Sling Media, speculate on the internal processes of Sling Media, or threaten legal action against Sling Media or any of its partners will not be allowed.

What do I do if I forget my Sling Account password?

Just reset your password. Click Log In in the upper right of each page of the Slingbox Answers Forum and then enter your Sling Account email address in the Forgot password? section of the resulting page. We will send you an email that will include a password reset link.

Can I delete my answers.slingbox.com account?

You can't delete an account  on  answers.slingbox.com, but you can manage your own content however  you'd  like. If you want to 'start over' for whatever reason, feel free  to  abandon the old account and create a new one with a new email  address.

I don't want other users to see my real name or info, yet when I'm logged in I see it in my Profile! Why?

After you have set up your Profile in the Your Stuff menu (see above, How do I create my public profile?), you will see your full, real name whenever you are logged in. However, for security reasons, other users will only see your User name and do not have access to your information.

Note: When you are logged in, you can see your full name,  but others will only see your username

How is the content organized?

All content in Slingbox Answers Forum is organized as follows:

  • Forum Categories—Categories represent a collection of topical forums as well as other categories, and are used to organize forums. Our categories are generally defined by a product name, such as "Slingbox PRO-HD," "Watch on Slingbox.com," or "SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone." Within these categories are forums focused on particular issues.
  • Forums—Forums are the areas where individual discussions take place. The discussions are displayed as a list of topics. For example, if you're looking for conversations about setting up Internet Viewing on your Slingbox from within Setup on Slingbox.com, click the Setup on Slingbox.com link on our Slingbox Answers Forum homepage, then click the Internet Viewing Set Up link in the resulting Setup on Slingbox.com category page to visit the forum.
  • Topics—Topics refer to the actual topics of discussion, each of which consists of messages displayed as a conversation. In our Internet Viewing Set Up example above, all the discussion listings you see in the Internet Viewing Set Up forum are known as topics.
  • Messages—Messages are the individual posts made by community members. If you click a topic to view a discussion, you'll see messages posted by other members.
  • Replies—Replies are posts made in response to other messages and are organized in a flat or threaded manner. For example, if someone posts a question in a topic, other members may post a reply to that question.
Why are topics marked as questions?

A Discussions topic is classified as a question by default; you'll see a question mark icon next to the topic, though a topic can be either a technical question or constructive feedback about Sling Media products. This lets the Sling Community know that a member is looking for answers. You can review your own resolved and unresolved questions by selecting Discussions from the Your Stuff menu.

To post a topic without it being flagged as a question, deselect the "Mark this topic as a question" checkbox under the Subject field in the Post Message screen.

What are question answers?

When a community member posts a question as a topic starter, other members can post an answer in reply. Please note that not all replies actually answer the question.

An answer can be just some hints or helpful information to help the poster solve an issue. The originator of the topic can mark such a reply as a "Helpful" post. A small yellow star will appear next to that reply and the person who posted the reply will be awarded 10 points. Here's what a reply marked as being "Helpful" looks like:

If a community member posts a specific answer that provides a solution to the original poster's issue, the originator can mark this reply as a "Solved" post. A large green star will appear next to that reply and the person who posted the reply will be awarded 20 points. Here's what a "Solved" post looks like:

Only the original topic poster has the option to mark replies as either Helpful or Solved or to not mark a reply at all. The originator can also end the discussion by marking the topic as "answered," which displays a green Answered message at the top of the topic page to let everyone know that the topic contains valid, helpful information. Here's how the "answered" topic appears:

Note: Only two replies may be classified as Helpful and only one reply may be classified as Solved in any question topic. Non-question topics do not offer these classifications

How do I get points? And what do these status indicators mean?

If you reply to another member's question topic, you are eligible to receive points from that member, though this is at his or her sole discretion. The originator has the option of marking a reply as either a Helpful Answer or a Correct Answer, which will add points to the respondent's account. These points will, in turn, increase a member's ranking (status level) in the community over time.

Here is a list of the points needed to achieve each status level in the Slingbox Answers Forum. You will receive 20 points for each reply that a member marks as "Correct Answer" and 10 points for each reply that a member has marked as "Helpful Answer."

Sling Community Glossary of Terms

If certain buzz words in our forums leave you scratching your head, here's some insight to what these words mean.

Discussion: An extended, public conversation about a particular topic or issue in a bulletin board-like format.

Forum: A collection of items that are relevant to one particular topic, such as discussions, FAQs, and links to support articles about a particular Slingbox or feature of the software. Forums are represented by folders on the Slingbox Answers Forum site.

Post: "Posting" is the act of submitting a message. A post is essentially a message from a member that appears in any Discussions forum. A post can be a new topic or a reply to a message. Slingbox Answers Forum are comprised of an original message that's posted about a topic and the replies posted in response.

Thread: A thread is the series of replies posted in response to the original topic. This comes from the expression, "following the thread of a conversation."

Threadjack: To wrongly post a dissimilar issue in an existing discussion, distracting from the true focus of the discussion. If your issue has any significant difference from a similar topic, then you're probably better off posting a new topic to focus attention on your particular issue.

Topic: A topic is the subject matter of a particular discussion, as set by the member who posts the original message to start that particular discussion.

Troll: A troll is someone who strives to disrupt a constructive conversation by posting flames or specious arguments. Trolls sometimes impersonate another user by posting under a false user name. If you have a troll in your midst, let a moderator know by clicking the Report Abuse link next to the post.
