There are two ways to reset your Slingbox: using a soft reset or a hard reset. What is the difference?
- A soft reset briefly interrupts power to the Slingbox. The settings and configuration that are within the Slingbox are retained.
- A hard reset completely purges all existing settings and configuration, and requires you to set your Slingbox back up again.
Why perform a soft reset?
The most common reason for performing a soft reset of your Slingbox is because it has become unresponsive. This is rare, but can sometimes happen. A soft reset is a quick way to get going again.
How do I perform a soft reset?
For all Slingbox models:
- Find the Reset button on the back panel of the Slingbox. (For the Slingbox M1/M2, the Reset button is recessed and requires a straightened paperclip.)
- Press and immediately release the Reset button. (You can also unplug the Slingbox, wait a second, then plug it back in.)
- Allow the Slingbox to power back up. It is ready when both the Power and the Network LEDs glow steadily together.
Why perform a hard reset?
A hard reset wipes out all configurations, settings, and (usually) software updates from your Slingbox. After you perform a hard reset, you'll need to reconfigure your Slingbox again.
The most common reasons for performing a hard reset on a Slingbox M1/M2, a Slingbox 350, or a Slingbox 500 are:
- The Slingbox has become unresponsive or has failed to complete an update.
- You need to change the network settings that you use with your Slingbox. For example, if you purchase a new router. (This does not apply to the Slingbox M1/M2; Network settings for those Slingbox models are changed with Slingplayer for Desktop.)
- You purchased a previously owned Slingbox that still has its old settings in place.
- You have some other operational error that can't be solved.
There's one more possible reason for performing a hard reset with previous Slingbox generations, like the Slingbox PRO-HD or SOLO:
- You forgot your Slingbox password. Resetting it is one way for you to start fresh and set new passwords.
Where is the Reset button?
On all of our Slingbox models, the Reset button is on the rear panel of the unit, next to where the power supply plugs in. The Slingbox M1/M2 Reset button is recessed; it requires a paperclip or pin to press it. See the related video, below, for more information.
How do I perform a hard reset?
To reset your Slingbox, you must be on your home network and have physical access the Slingbox.
- With your Slingbox powered on:
- For Slingbox 500 and Slingbox 350 models: Press and hold the Reset button down until the Network light on the front panel flashes twice quickly. Be patient - it can take up to 60 seconds for that quick "double flash."
- For Slingbox M1/M2 models: Use a paperclip to press and hold in the recessed Reset button for approximately 10 seconds, or until the Network LED blinks twice quickly.
- For all other Slingbox models: Press and hold the Reset button on the back of the Slingbox until you see the Sling logo LED blink. Note that this could take as long as 30 seconds, and you may see the other LEDs blink in various ways before the Sling logo LED lights.
- Release the Reset button, and allow the Slingbox to reset. This could take several minutes.
The LEDs on the front of the Slingbox will cycle through a few different patterns as the Slingbox restores itself.

How can I tell when the Slingbox is ready after I perform a hard reset?
- Slingbox M1/M2: After about 2 minutes, the power LED glows steadily, and the Sling logo LED blinks, meaning that your Slingbox is in a factory-reset state, ready to be reconfigured.
- Slingbox 500: The Slingbox 500 can take as long as 10 minutes to complete a hard reset procedure. It is ready to be reconfigured when the Sling logo LED blinks slowly. You can also tell that it's ready for reconfiguration by turning on your TV—the Slingbox 500 TV interface tells you the status.
- Other Slingbox models: Most other models are finished with a hard reset procedure within about 1 minute. Wait until the Power LED glows steadily, and the other LED(s) flash in a regular pattern. With some Slingbox models, like the Slingbox SOLO, the unit is ready to be reset when the Power and Network LEDs glow steadily.
