How audio and video passthrough works on your Slingbox

The Slingbox M1/M2, Slingbox 500, Slingbox 350, Slingbox PRO-HD, Slingbox PRO, Slingbox 120, and Slingbox SOLO all support audio and video passthrough.

In terms of video and audio connections, a Slingbox is designed to "sit between" your set-top box and your TV. It "passes through" the video and audio signals from your set-top box to your TV.

With most Slingbox models, HD TV is going to use Component (red/blue/green) video cables, along with red/white stereo audio cables. The Slingbox 500 model also has HDMI inputs/outputs.

As the example below illustrates, you route your audio and video as follows:

  • Audio/video output of your set-top box --> Audio/video input of Slingbox --> Audio/video output of Slingbox --> TV audio/video input:

Please note: You can't mix and match plug types. If you decide to use Component cables, then you must use the component outputs on the set-top box, the component inputs and outputs on the Slingbox, and the component inputs on your TV. You can't connect component cables from your set-top box to your Slingbox, and then use an HDMI cable from your Slingbox to your TV.

In most cases, component cables (red/green/blue) ... along with the red/white stereo audio cables ... are generally the recommended choice. HDMI connections are convenient, but some programming providers encode HDML signals with copy protection technologies, such as HDCP, that can interfere with the video stream to your Slingbox.

Copy protection technologies are not supported by component cables, making them a better choice if HDMI cables cause problems.

When I connect my set-top box to my TV with HDMI connections, I can't stream video at all using any version of SlingPlayer. Why?
If you have video equipment that connects to your TV using an HDMI cable and you try to stream, you may get extremely poor or no video using Watch on Slingbox.com, SlingPlayer for Windows or SlingPlayer for Mac. Here's the reason and a way to fix it.
