Fixing "No video signal" problems with Setup on Slingbox.com

Getting a "No video signal" error with your earlier-model Slingbox? Take a look here for some help.

Fortunately, the No video signal error is usually easy to fix. It's often one of two things:

  • Your video source isn't powered on;
  • Your video source isn't properly connected to your Slingbox.

Make sure that your video source is working properly before you try to set up your Slingbox.

Confirming that your video source is properly connected

  1. Go to the TV where your Slingbox is installed.
  2. Turn on the TV.
Make sure that the video source (set-top box, DVR, and so on) that you're connecting to your Slingbox works properly. For instance, can you see and hear video on your TV?
  3. Look at the back of the video source.
Check that the video cables that you've connected to your Slingbox are connected to the OUT ports on your video source.
  4. Now check the other end of the cables. Are they going into one of the IN ports on your Slingbox?
  5. Compare the colors of the ports that your cables are connected to ... they should match on both your video source and your Slingbox.
    1. If you're using composite (red, white, yellow), then that needs to be the same on both your video source and your Slingbox.
    2. If you're using component (red, blue, green), then that also needs to be the same between your video source and your Slingbox.
    3. With component (red/green/blue) connections, you also need to connect separate audio (red, white) cables for component connections! With component connections, the red/green/blue cables are only for video.
  6. There are two ways to connect your Slingbox to your video source:
    1. Using an additional output from your video source to connect to your Slingbox. The connection between your video source and your TV isn't affected.
    2. Using your Slingbox as a "passthrough" between your video source and your TV.

  7. If you're using the latter type of connection, then make sure that the necessary cables are connected between the OUT ports on your Slingbox, and the IN ports on your TV. If you don't do this, then your Slingbox will show a picture ... but your TV won't.
