All Slingbox network systems are OK

Your Slingbox works fine until you turn on your TV. Then suddenly, there's no video in SlingPlayer.

You've got your Slingbox hooked up to your set-top box and everything else is connected. All is well until you turn on your TV. SlingPlayer then stops showing video for no apparent reason.

Yes, this problem can be more than a bit mysterious. What's causing it may be a copy protection scheme that's built into some set-top boxes.

This scheme is called Selectable Output Control or SOC. It's activated when your TV is connected to your set-top box with an HDMI cable and you then turn on your television. Without you knowing it, SOC then turns off all output from the other analog ports (Component, Composite, and S-Video). SOC is used in some set-top boxes by some service providers (such as some cable companies). It turns on and off without any intervention from you.

This is supposed to prevent you from attaching something to your set-top box and then recording programs. The problem is that it also prevents your Slingbox from streaming video, so SlingPlayer has no video, regardless of the platform (Mac, Windows, Watch on Slingbox.com, or SlingPlayer for Mobile Devices).

To enable your Slingbox to placeshift HD content with an SOC (Selectable Output Control) capable set-top box, one solution is to disconnect the HDMI cables from the set-top box to the TV and use Component cables instead. Because Component video offers full High-Definition resolution (up to 1080i), doing this does not reduce the picture quality. It allows you to watch your HD content anywhere.

Another option if you prefer to keep using HDMI

Another option you can use, if you'd like to keep using the HDMI input from your set-top box with your Slingbox, is an inexpensive third-party product called the HDMI Adapter (or HDMI Splitter).

This third-party product (not sold by Sling Media) is very simple: it takes an HDMI signal from your set-top box, and converts it to Component video (and stereo audio). Using this product can help you in a couple of ways:

  • It offers Component video/stereo audio connections if you'd like to use that connection method, but your set-top box doesn't offer Component;
  • It can help if you're experiencing a "blank screen" problem while streaming (either your home TV goes blank when you're streaming remotely, or certain programs don't appear).

The HDMI Adapter product is easy to set up and requires no further attention once that's done. For more information, take a look at the manufacturer's website:
