If you manually configured your router for Internet Viewing of your Slingbox, those connections may break after updating to SlingPlayer 2.0 for Windows. The new Slingbox Software (otherwise known as firmware) that's included with SlingPlayer 2.0 changes how the Slingbox receives an IP address assignment from your home network's router.
(The IP address is the unique number that your router assigns to devices like your computer and your Slingbox to keep track of it all on your network.)
What that means is, the IP address that your Slingbox gets from the router after you upgrade to SlingPlayer 2.0 for Windows (and the Slingbox restarts) may be different from the IP address that it had before. When that happens, the settings you manually added to your router no longer work.
Here are some ways to resolve this:
Change the IP address of your Slingbox back to what it was before
If you select the Manual Configuration option during the Internet Viewing portion of the Slingbox Setup Assistant, you will be given the opportunity to manually set a new IP address for your Slingbox. You can use that to set the IP address for your Slingbox back to what it was before you upgraded.
Aren't sure what that old IP address of your Slingbox was? Just log in to your router and look for that manual Port Forwarding entry that you did when you first set up your Slingbox. The destination IP address is the address that you want to assign to your Slingbox.
Here are the steps to manually change the IP address of your Slingbox in SlingPlayer 2.0 for Windows:
- While connected to your Slingbox, select Setup Assistant from the Settings menu.
- When the Slingbox Setup Assistant opens up, select Setup Internet Viewing from the list of options on the left.
- Click the manual configuration link that is near the bottom of the screen.
- Select the Manually configure Network Settings link.
- Click the Change link below the Slingbox Settings listings.
- Type the original IP address of your Slingbox in the IP address field.
Once you have changed this value, continue through the Setup Assistant. If your router is still configured correctly, the Internet Viewing setup should be complete.
Change the IP address of your Slingbox to what your router now wants it to be
The other option you can try is essentially the opposite of what's above:
- Follow steps 1-3, above.
- In step 4, enter the manufacturer and model of your router, then click Go.
The Slingbox Network Assistant launches.
- Follow the directions in the Slingbox Network Assistant.
- In Step 5 of 5, you'll put the current IP address of the Slingbox into your router's port forwarding setting.
IMPORTANT: Choose whichever method you like ... the principle remains the same: the IP address of your Slingbox has to be the same as the IP address that your router is using for port forwarding.
