How To

Adding a Slingbox using a domain name/router IP address

If you’re an advanced user, and you want to add a Slingbox to your Slingbox Directory -- but you don't have the Slingbox ID -- you can add a Slingbox to the Slingbox Directory by using the the IP address of your router (or your domain name).

But you may not even need to do this!

  • The Slingbox Directory automatically displays any Slingbox that it finds on the network that you're currently using;
  • Your Sling Account stores your Slingbox Directory for you, so you have it wherever you use SlingPlayer 2.0 for Windows. If you have not logged into your Sling Account, that's the first thing to do. If the Slingbox that you want to still doesn't appear in your Slingbox Directory, then continue with these steps.

To add a Slingbox to your Slingbox Directory using the IP address of your router (or your domain name):

  1. Make sure you've logged into your Sling Account.
If you see your Sling Account user name (in blue type) in the upper right corner of the SlingPlayer window, you're logged in.
If you see Log In in blue type, then you're not logged in. Click the blue text to open the login window, then log in to your Sling Account.
  2. Select Slingbox Directory from the Connect menu.
    The Slingbox Directory opens.
  3. Click Add.
The New Slingbox Entry Properties dialog box opens.
  4. Click to select the box in the Direct Connection section.
  5. Enter the domain name or the IP address of your router, and the port number for the Slingbox you want to add.
  6. Click OK to add this Slingbox to your directory.

Note: Using an IP address to find a Slingbox works much better if your Internet service provider (ISP) has issued you with a static IP address (one that doesn't change from session to session). By contrast, a dynamic IP address can change each time you use your computer. With a dynamic IP address, you'd have to enter a new IP address in SlingPlayer every time you used your computer, which is not practical to do when you're home ... and impossible to do if you're away (because you won't be able to connect to your Slingbox). Check with your ISP to see if you have a static IP address, or a dynamic one.

How do I know if I have a static or a dynamic IP address?

  • Best way: ask your Internet service provider (ISP).
  • If you can just power up your computer, then immediately bring up a web page or check your email, you could have a static IP address.
  • If you have to "log in" or use"connection software" to connect to the Internet every time you boot up your computer, then you probably have a dynamic IP address.

With a dynamic IP address, you're probably being issued a different IP address from your ISP every time you connect to the Internet. The setting that you entered above probably won't work for very long ... possibly only once.

But the best way to connect is using the Slingbox ID, if you have it

It's almost always much better to add a new Slingbox using the Slingbox ID. The Slingbox ID is a unique number assigned to each Slingbox. Using your Slingbox ID, SlingPlayer can find your Slingbox when you're away from home ... no matter what IP address your ISP issues to you.
