How to optimize SlingPlayer video on your iPhone or iPod touch

Making some minor adjustments can help you get the very best video and audio.

With SlingPlayer for iPhone, the quality of the network connection has a huge impact on streaming quality. It needs a strong network signal to stream the best-quality video. The stronger the signal, the better results you'll see.

If the signal isn't very strong, try changing locations if you can. But also try the steps below to help optimize your video quality:

Adjust your video settings

  1. If you're not streaming already, connect to your Slingbox.
  2. Tap the screen to display the main controls.
  3. Tap Quality. In most cases, it's best to keep this setting on AUTO. This will automatically optimize your stream to bring HQ-like quality to your device with lower bandwidth requirements:

  4. If you're having trouble with choppy video, try changing Quality to SQ (Standard Quality). This helps ensure the smoothest streaming at all times, but you won't see the best-quality streaming, even if network conditions are excellent.
  5. If you always want to make sure that you're viewing in the highest quality mode, tap HQ (High Quality). But be aware that if current network conditions aren't good enough, video quality could suffer - again, it might be best to keep your Quality setting on AUTO.

Still having issues? Count the green dots!

SlingPlayer uses green dots to help you troubleshoot streaming conditions. To see the green dots, tap Options while streaming:

If you see ... Then ...

  • There are only a few reasons you will see one dot when using SlingPlayer:
    • You may have used the Quality button to switch to SQ (Standard Quality) mode.
    • In the Settings screen, you may have set the Video Quality on Cellular/Video Quality on Wifi setting to SQ (Standard Quality)

  • Your Slingbox isn't fully-configured for Internet Viewing ... here's how to fix it when you are at home:
  1. From your Windows or Mac OS computer, launch Setup on Slingbox.com.

  2. Select your Slingbox (if you have more than one).

  3. Click Set Up Internet Viewing.

  4. Follow the onscreen steps to fully configure your Slingbox for Internet Viewing, including setting up your router manually if you're asked to. You can also see our helpful video series on router configuration (linked below).

  • Everything is properly set up! You should be able to use HQ (High Quality) video mode and see excellent video quality.

If not, your network download speeds might not meet the needed requirements.

  • If you see four dots, it's a situation similar to seeing two dots (above).
    • While the video quality that you see with four dots may be better than with two dots ...
    • ... if you're still not satisfied with video quality, follow the configuration steps for two dots, above. (In almost all cases, that's what you should do.)
