What's a network?

Let's talk about networks. You might be asking yourself, "How do I know if I have a network in my home?" Good question!

In the simplest terms, a network consists of two (or more) computers or devices that are connected to share information.

So, when we say home network, we're simply referring to your home computer, its connection to the Internet, plus your Slingbox. They all hook up to one another and share information, right? Right! There you have it -- you do have a network!

Your network in this instance needs to have a few essential elements to get Remote Viewing up and running:

A cable or DSL Modem.
A recommended upstream network speed of at least 256 Kbps.
A home network router - wired or wireless.

Let's explain these elements. You probably know what a cable or DSL modem is already. Just in case, though, it's the little box that brings the Internet into your home. The upstream speed is how fast your Internet service is capable of sending ("uploading") information to the Internet. And a router forwards (or "routes") the Internet connection to one or more of your home computers or other devices, such as your Slingbox. Frequently, your modem and router are combined into one box.
