General questions about the Slingbox

What is a Slingbox?

A Slingbox is an audio-video (AV) device that you can use to watch your TV programs wherever you are. You can watch your TV programs by connecting to your Slingbox via your desktop or laptop computer, smartphone, tablet, and more. You can even control and program your DVR remotely. This is called placeshifting. The Slingbox connects to your TV's set-top box, your TV, and your home network. After it's all set up, all you need is an Internet connection to watch your TV anywhere ... just like you'd watch it at home ... enjoying the exact same programs: live sports, local channels, your DVR's recorded content … even on-demand programming. For more information, go to http://www.slingbox.com/go/slingbox.

What are the differences between Slingbox 350 and Slingbox 500?

With both Slingbox models, you can placeshift your TV anywhere in the world in sparkling 1080p HD resolution. The Slingbox 500 adds built-in Wi-Fi, HDMI connectors, the choice of setup via your TV screen or your computer, and additional features like My Media, Blockbuster On Demand, DishWorld, etc. For a detailed comparison chart go to http://www.slingbox.com/go/compare-slingboxes.

Does Slingbox.com work with both Windows and Mac OS computers? Will it work with my Slingbox?

You can set up your Slingbox and watch TV using Slingbox.com with either Windows or Mac OS computers.

We call this feature Watch on Slingbox.com - it is optimized to work with these Slingbox models:

  • Slingbox 500
  • Slingbox 350
  • Slingbox PRO-HD
  • Slingbox SOLO

If you have an earlier Slingbox model (like the original Slingbox Classic, Slingbox TUNER, Slingbox AV or Slingbox PRO), you should be able to set up your Slingbox and use Watch on Slingbox.com (if you're using a Windows PC). But these Slingbox models aren't supported with Slingbox.com and haven't been tested with it.

Instead, we recommend that you use the earlier desktop versions of SlingPlayer (either Windows or Mac OS) to watch your TV with these earlier Slingbox models. Unfortunately, we no longer develop that older software, but we still make it available here on our website for those older Slingbox models. Just use the search bar to find it.

Can I watch with my smart TV?

The SlingPlayer app is currently not supported on any smart TVs. However you can watch your Slingbox on a TV using a connected device, such as a Roku, NETGEAR NeoTV or WD TV Live. The SlingPlayer app is available on these devices - and others! For more information on SlingPlayer for connected devices, please go to http://www.slingbox.com/go/spcd.

Do the new Slingbox 350 and Slingbox 500 work with the older SlingPlayer desktop application?

Does Sling Media offer a universal iOS app?

What are My Media features for the Slingbox 500?

The My Media features, available only with the Slingbox 500, enable you to save and view your smartphone's pictures and videos, as well as other stored picture and video content that you may already have. Just attach a USB drive to your Slingbox 500, and use SlingPlayer for iPhone/iPod touch, or SlingPlayer for Android Phones, to copy your smartphone pictures and videos that you've taken to the USB drive attached to your Slingbox 500. (The USB drive can also have existing content on it.) Once that's done, you can enjoy this stored content via your TV at home ... or you can view it when you're away via Slingbox.com, or SlingPlayer for iPhone.

Using a Slingbox

Can the home viewer watch a different channel than the remote viewer?

The home and remote viewer can only watch different channels if the Slingbox is connected to a secondary set-top box, one that is not being used by the home viewer. If the remote viewer is accessing the same set-top box as the home viewer, they both have to watch the same programming.

How many viewers can use a Slingbox at once?

Only one remote user can access the Slingbox at a time. For more information, click to read this article:
"The Slingbox is designed for one viewer at a time."

Can the virtual remote feature within SlingPlayer control a set-top box and a TV?

The virtual remote can only control the video source configured during setup, and not any other devices. Your TV at home remains off when you access your Slingbox (unless someone at home switches it on!)

Can I access the Slingbox from another country?

Yes – all you need is an Internet connection. You can access the Slingbox via a laptop, desktop, smartphone or tablet ... or via connected devices to watch on another TV.

Can the Slingbox control my DVR?

Yes, with its built-in IR emitter, the Slingbox can control all the functions of your set-top box. You can access your program guide, watch recorded shows, even enjoy on-demand features. It's just like sitting in front of your TV at home!

I just bought SlingPlayer for my mobile device (iPhone, Android, iPad, etc.)? Why do I need Slingbox.com?

If you're using SlingPlayer on your mobile device (like a an Android Tablet or an iPad, etc.) you still need to use Slingbox.com on a Windows or Mac OS computer to configure your Slingbox and set up your home router properly. It's a one-time setup process which only takes a few minutes ... but it requires a computer, as a Slingbox can't be fully configured via a mobile version of SlingPlayer. Once that's done, you're good to go! You'd only need Slingbox.com to make setup changes.

What is the impact on my wireless data limit when using the SlingPlayer mobile app?

Check with the Internet provider with whom you have the limited plan (usually either your home Internet provider or your mobile phone carrier). Most providers offer online (or mobile phone-based) tools that you can use to check your data usage on a regular (even daily) basis. These tools can help you monitor usage, and make sure that your data plan is the right one for you based on your needs. For more information, please go to http://support.slingbox.com/get/KB-2000398.html.

Does the Slingbox have a power switch?
