Troubleshooting

Before upgrading to SlingPlayer 2.0, consider updating the Slingbox list in your Sling Account

If you're using SlingPlayer 1.5, and you don't have full administrative privileges to your computer, you might need to enter your Slingbox list into your Sling Account manually before upgrading to SlingPlayer 2.0.

You could be lacking administrative privileges for your computer if:

  • your Windows user account isn't designated as part of the "Administrators" group (or your site's equivalent category);
  • your computer is on a "managed network," one for which upgrading, security, and other policies are established centrally by your IT department.

Note: If in doubt, the best thing to do is wait until you're back home, within your home network, before upgrading from SlingPlayer 1.x to SlingPlayer 2.0 for Windows.

Background: Your Sling Account is a free feature that helps you by keeping track of (among many things) the Slingbox list that SlingPlayer keeps in your Slingbox Directory. When you upgrade from SlingPlayer 1.x for Windows to SlingPlayer 2.0 for Windows, you are prompted to create a Sling Account. When the update process concludes, your Slingbox list is imported in your Sling Account. This way, you can access any Slingbox in your Slingbox Directory, no matter what computer you're using, just by logging into your Sling Account.

However, if you upgrade to SlingPlayer 2.0 for Windows while logged into a user account that lacks full administrative privileges, your Slingbox list might not be fully copied to your Sling Account. This is more likely if your Slingbox Directory contains a long Slingbox list.

What to do:

  • Best advice: Wait until you're within your home network before upgrading to SlingPlayer 2.0.
  • If you prefer to upgrade before you're back home, to make absolutely sure that your Slingbox list is available in SlingPlayer 2.0 for Windows, the best course is to enter the Slingbox list into your Sling Account manually before upgrading. The following info tells you how.

BEFORE UPGRADING FROM SLINGPLAYER 1.X FOR WINDOWS FROM OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOME NETWORK:

First: Create a Slingbox list

  1. Launch SlingPlayer 1.x for Windows. You can also use SlingPlayer for Macintosh for this purpose.
  2. On Windows, open the Slingbox Directory by choosing Slingbox Directory from the Slingbox menu, or pressing Alt+D.
With SlingPlayer for Macintosh, choose Slingbox Directory from the Window menu, or pressing Command-D.
  3. Use a word processor or a text editor to create a new document. Use this document to create a list of the Slingbox names that you see in the Slingbox Directory.
  4. For each Slingbox, in the Slingbox Directory, click that Slingbox listing once to select it, then click Edit.
A window opens, containing info for that Slingbox.
  5. Drag to select the ID number for that Slingbox. (You can't miss it ... it's 32 characters long, with four dashes.) Then copy it to the Clipboard (Ctrl-C for Windows, Command-C for Mac OS).
  6. Go to the Slingbox list that you made in the word processor or text editor. Paste the Slingbox ID number next to the corresponding Slingbox name.
  7. Also type the password for that Slingbox. IMPORTANT: Keep this password list secure!
  8. Repeat the process for every Slingbox in the Slingbox Directory.

Second: Enter the Slingbox information into your Sling Account

  1. When you've finished creating your Slingbox list, from any Windows or Mac OS web browser, go to the Sling Accounts website. The link is at the bottom of this page.
  2. If you already have a Sling Account, go ahead and log in.
  3. If you don't have a Sling Account yet, click Get an account to set one up. Then log into your new Sling Account.
  4. Click Register a new Slingbox.
  5. Use the list that you created to copy/paste the name and ID for each Slingbox in your Slingbox Directory. Then click Save. (You can enter the passwords later.)
  6. Repeat for each Slingbox in your list.

Third: Upgrade to SlingPlayer 2.0 for Windows

  1. Download the SlingPlayer 2.0 for Windows installer, then update your SlingPlayer 1.x for Windows software to SlingPlayer 2.0 for Windows.
  2. When the upgrade is done, launch SlingPlayer 2.0 for Windows.
  3. If you see blue text saying Log in in the upper-right corner of the SlingPlayer window, click that blue text to log in to your Sling Account. If you see your name, then you're already logged in.
  4. Choose Slingbox Directory from the Connect menu, or press Alt+D.
You should see your Slingbox list in the Slingbox Directory.

Optional: If you want to allow users to connect to a Slingbox without having to enter a password

  1. Within SlingPlayer 2.0 for Windows, choose Slingbox Directory from the Connect menu, or press Alt+D.
  2. Refer to the Slingbox list that you made, select a Slingbox from the Slingbox Directory, click Edit, and enter the password for that Slingbox. If necessary, select the box to indicate whether or not the password that you entered is an Administrator password.
